It’s National HIV Testing Day

NHTD_250x300More than 1 million people in the United States are living with HIV — and almost one in five don’t know they are infected. HIV testing is a critical first step in taking responsibility for one’s health.

Each year on June 27, National HIV Testing Day — organized by the CDC, AIDS.gov and other organizations — is observed here in the United States. The goal of NHTD is to encourage those people who are at risk to be tested and take greater control over their health.

The observance was started in 1995 in response to the growing number of HIV infections in communities of color and other heavily impacted communities.

The CDC’s official website has a host of resources and promotional tools that are definitely worth checking out.  Of special note is a feature that allows mobile phone users to send a text message with their zip code to KnowIt (566948) and in return receive a text with information about HIV testing sites near them.

Another widget from AIDS.gov is an HIV/AIDS prevention and service provider locater.  It allows people to locate HIV prevention, housing, mental health, substance abuse, testing, and treatment services in their area.
