IOM Issues New Report: Best Care at Lower Cost

Today, the Institute of Medicine issued a report, Best Care at Lower Cost: The Path to Continuously Learning Health Care in America, which examines the nation’s need for better value from our health care, as well as the potential solutions that exist through innovation, science, and emerging technology.  The report focuses on the importance of transitioning to a continuously learning health system—one that, according to the brief, “aligns science and informatics, patient-clinician partnerships, incentives, and a culture of continuous improvement to produce the best care at lower cost.”

In a press release today, Kaiser Permanente echoed support for the report’s findings and recommendations.  Kaiser Permanente Chairman and CEO George Halvorson is a member of the IOM Committee on Learning Healthcare System of America.
