A Sustainable Food Solution in Your Own Backyard

As the proverb goes: Give someone a fish; you feed that person for today.  Teach someone to fish; and you feed that person for a lifetime.  Keith Fabisiak, M.D., pediatrician with Kaiser Permanente Santa Clara, would argue that the proverb is just as true if you teach that someone how to garden.

Dr. Fabisiak spent a recent Saturday working the crowds at the Monterey Bay Aquarium’s annual Cooking for Solutions event, which focuses on sustainable foods. The event engages visitors in conversation around the value and importance of sustainable food and the need to protect and conserve our natural resources for the health of those ecosystems and the communities that surround them.

Showing off his backyard garden displays, Dr. Fabisiak explained to children and families alike just how simple it is to grow your own produce.

“Growing your own garden is super easy,” said Dr. Fabisiak. “It’s especially fun for kids and gets them digging in the dirt and learning more about where their food comes from. We all need to eat more healthy, and this is a great way to make your own healthy food.”
