Talking at Davos About Harnessing Personal Data and the Gift of Walking

Some of the world’s most important conversations happen each January at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland. This year’s forum was no exception, and two Kaiser Permanente executive leaders — Chairman and CEO George Halvorson, and Raymond J. Baxter, PhD, senior vice president for Community Benefit, Research, and Health Policy — shared perspectives on everything from averting chronic conditions to the burgeoning social and economic values of personal data.

Halvorson talked about, among other things, the proven benefits of walking in reducing incidence of hypertension, heart disease, diabetes, and other chronic conditions. He also shared a video, “The Gift of Walking,” which makes a compelling case for the numerous health benefits  of walking.

Baxter discussed why a building a culture of trust is required if we are to help reap the benefits of personal data. “To unlock this value, today’s leaders have an increasing obligation to rethink their approaches to the use of personal data and the role of the individual,” said Baxter, who is also president of Kaiser Permanente International. “New approaches are needed that help individuals to understand how and when data is being collected, how the data is being used and the implications of those actions.”
