Fast Food Nation Author Eric Schlosser Talks About Connections Between Food and Health

Eric Schlosser, author of Fast Food Nation, believes physicians and others in health care can play a key role in educating patients on nutrition and food issues. Speaking at the annual “Food for Health Forum” on Oct. 15 in San Francisco, Schlosser talked about the obesity epidemic, fast food marketing and the importance of creating access to healthy food for all Americans.

“The nutritional education that American children are receiving right now is coming from the fast food companies, the cereal companies and the soda companies, “ he said. “We need to counterbalance those messages.”

Schlosser said he is nevertheless “hugely hopeful” that things will get better. It’s been 10 years since the publication of Fast Food Nation, he noted. “In 10 years I’ve seen an enormous change and I’ve seen how well-educated, upper-middle-class people are changing their diets. The next step is to bring access to healthy food to every single American.”
