Healthy Aging – It’s never too late to start

It’s never too late to take your health in your hands and implement healthy practices to prevent common problems encountered as you age. Keeping in mind that the key the healthy aging is a healthy lifestyle, below are few tips to keep you on track no matter where you are in your aging journey:

  • Keep your body moving. Whether it’s walking outside, taking a yoga class or going for a swim, doing something active everyday that you enjoy is important to maintaining your strength, balance, flexibility and heart health.
  • Eat well to maintain a healthy weight. As you age, you may find your metabolism slowing down. Because extra weight increases your risk for heart disease, diabetes and high blood pressure, eating nutritious foods in the right amounts can help you keep a healthy weight.
  • Quit smoking: As you age, one of the best things you can do for yourself is to quit smoking. Along with great online resources to help you quit smoking, pay a visit to the Center for Total Health to learn more about the smoking cessations programs offered by KP.
  • Be mindful of your mental health. Having a positive outlook is important for your wellbeing, but sometimes, regardless of age, life can get you down. Socializing with friends and lowering your stress with exercise and laughter are some simple tips to keep you upbeat as you age. However, if you find yourself or a loved one experiencing anxiety or depression, don’t be afraid to seek professional help. You can also learn more about mental health and aging by taking the Mental Health & Wellness Tour at the Center. Through the power of storytelling, you will learn from a wide range of personas – at various stages of aging – whose health is impacted by varying degrees of mental health issues or concerns.

The Kaiser Permanente Center for Total Health hosts internal and external educational events. All events – including annual banquets, quarterly meetings, trainings, interviews – feature healthy catering options and can be customized to incorporate the interactive exhibits that make the Center for Total health experience both fun and informative for attendees. If your organization is interested in hosting an event, please send us an event request via our website. We look forward to hearing from you!
